The mud returns November 01, 2004 It’s 59 degrees in the heat of the day today. That’s cold. Little Rock is warmer that Baghdad, can you believe it? I mean, two weeks ago we were still pushing into the low 100s. Now it’s Seattle weather. Cool, rainy, all-over damp. And have I mentioned the mud? I remember writing about mud back in April, the last time we got measurable rain here. There is very little grass here, but a whole lot of dirt. It’s not Arkansas dirt, it’s baby-powder fine dirt that acts like a sponge when it rains. The dirt soaks up the rain and holds onto it, turning into gooey mud that never goes away. It sticks to boots and is capable of grabbing rocks with each step. Boot scrapers are powerless against this mud. The mud seems to scoff at those who try to stomp it out of their boots. They say the rainy season lasts through February. We’re in day two and it feels like I’ve been tracking mud around with me for days. It could be a long winter...
