“Do you like green eggs and ham?”

November 21, 2004

Dr. Seuss must have been a Joe — an infantry soldier.

“I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them, Sam-I-am.”

Dr. Seuss clearly didn’t like green eggs and ham. And he was talking to some guy named Sam. Could that have been our own Uncle Sam?

I suspect so.

You may be thinking, as I always have, that it takes quite an imagination to think of green eggs.

As I sit here today in the conference room of 3rd Battalion’s Charlie Company at Camp Gunslinger I can tell you that green eggs and ham do exist.

And it’s not good.

There’s a plate of green eggs and ham sitting next to me. I’m trying to decide if I’m hungry enough to eat them. I’m thinking not.

Dr. Seuss was right about green eggs. No good can come of it.

And it’s not like this is a unique day.

I don’t know how it happens, but army eggs are green — army green, fittingly enough.

Really. The yokes of the flattened fried eggs are green. No, I don’t know why they’re green. And really, why doesn’t matter if you’re hungry enough.

The guys make a habit of putting the eggs in a biscuit with some ham. That way they can’t see the eggs.

One guy walked through here a minute ago, looked at his plate and said, “Yes, I do eat green eggs and ham. Yes I do, Sam. Yes I do.”

Here’s more evidence that Dr. Seuss was a Joe.

He didn’t eat them in the rain, on a boat or in a train.

Throw in a humvee and those are all the transportation options for the infantry.

It’s kind of like the green egg sandwich. How do you eat green eggs? You cover them with hot sauce, ham and biscuits.

Yummy.
