A not-so subtle hint October 07, 2006 What!? There I was, sitting in a pickup with Lt. Landon Derentz of the Balad Airbase Public Affairs shop when Derentz pulled out a copy of one of my stories which was marked up with a bright orange highlighter. He said "The bosses" didn't like the mention of mortar fire in the story. It was within the rules, but he wouldn't recommend we report on the mortars anymore. Right. There are no indirect fire attacks at a base nicknamed Mortaritaville by its residents. Then he said something that got under my skin. "They don't like anything written about attacks. You didn't break the rules, though," he said. "I'm just saying the bosses don't like it and that could make things more difficult for you around here." What!? I told one of the flight crews about it and the "Godfather" jokes immediately followed. They say we may fight a horse head in our beds tonight. Unbelievable!
