Fresh faces!

October 11, 2006

I saw a hog patch on the sleeve of a soldier in the chow hall today at lunch.

A hog patch!

Know what that means? Arkansas' 875th Engineer Battalion is in town.

The National Guard unit out of Jonesboro arrived yesterday — and they are everywhere.

The 875th is the last major Arkansas National Guard unit to deploy to the war zone. All the others have been here already. One year from now, these men and women will return home again.

But right now, they're just trying to figure out how to make this patch of Iraqi dirt home.

It makes me smile every time I see one of those hog patches. It's like running into a friend at the grocery store.

Welcome!
